Jim Solomon is a serial entrepreneur, MBA Professor and Certified Public Accountant who is dedicated to teaching entrepreneurs the practical business knowledge that can only come from having ‘been there and done that’.
Jim has been an officer, director and co-‐owner of several small businesses that grew into multi-‐million dollar companies. Having served on the Board of Directors of nearly a dozen publicly held companies, he has nearly three decades of hands-‐on experience in strategic planning, mergers/acquisitions, joint ventures and international expansion. Perhaps the most notable accomplishments is Jim’s exceptional success in assisting numerous companies to get funded. Additionally, he has directly raised over $50 million in equity, $40 million in commercial loans and restructured nearly $20 million of convertible debt.
In 1993 the University of Utah recruited Jim as an adjunct professor where he has taught nearly a thousand MBA’s how to successfully start and grow their own businesses. His course curriculum came from the School of Hard Knocks where he and many of his entrepreneurial colleagues gained extremely pragmatic knowledge from their successes as well as flame-‐outs.
In 1997 Jim teamed up with Fran Tarkenton, NFL Hall of Fame Quarterback and entrepreneurial expert, to co-‐host The New Entrepreneur, a nationally syndicated weekly radio talk show dedicated to helping entrepreneurs successfully navigate the oftentimes treacherous waters small business ownership. Jim and Fran continue to work together closely in their mission to help small business owners accelerate their successes and avoid needless mistakes.
Jim’s highly acclaimed MBA course is a treasure chest of entrepreneurial wisdom that is now captured on DVD and contained in two e-‐books available on Amazon.com. The first book is entitled The Six Secrets to Starting Your Own Business. His newest title is The Five Critical Steps to Getting Funded.
Jim and his lovely wife have been married over 40 years. They are extremely proud of their four married children and spouses who have blessed them with eleven beautiful grandchildren. When not with his family or helping entrepreneurs, Jim can often be found fly-‐fishing in his float-‐tube on one of Utah’s remote mountain lakes.
Here’s What Fran Tarkington Has to Say About Professor Jim Solomon
Fran Tarkenton, the CEO of OneMoreCustomer.com and NFL Hall of Fame Quarterback, had this to say about Professor Jim Solomon:
Jim Solomon is one of the brightest entrepreneurial minds that I know. If I were a small business owner seeking an all-‐star coach, Jim will clearly be my pick. His extensive experience as an entrepreneur coupled with his exceptional teaching skills uniquely qualified Jim as an ‘expert’ on small business.
Jim’s passion for helping small business owners to succeed is reflected in the 18 years that he has taught nearly a thousand MBA students exactly what to do and when to do it. Their testimonials about his contribution to their achievements are very powerful and inspiring.
Fourteen years ago Professor Jim and I co-‐hosted a nationally syndicated weekly radio talk show called The New Entrepreneur. Our purpose then and now remains unchanged. We are committed to helping small business owners achieve extraordinary results by teaching them the practical knowledge that we gained as hands-‐on entrepreneurs ourselves.
One of Jim’s most notable talents is his ability to secure funding for small businesses. He has a remarkable understanding of exactly what it takes to get funded. When asked how he does it, Jim’s response is simply “I merely follow the fundamentals -‐ every time”. In football terms we refer to it as ‘block and tackle’, sticking to the basics.
I strongly encourage you to discover the gems of practical application contained within these pages. Whether you are starting your first business or wish to take your existing company to a whole new level, this book is a ‘must read’.
A Note From Professor Jim Solomon
I wrote this book at a cost of nearly $100 million -‐ well sort of. The research extended more than 28 years and includes 163 sleepless nights representing the number of payrolls that I almost missed. But actually, it was worth it.
I have been fortunate to secure so much money during my entrepreneurial life. Admittedly, much of the effort has been motivated by desperation rather than choice. If I hadn’t been successful in getting the funding, the companies that I assisted would have likely laid off dozens of employees and possibly lost tons of investment dollars. Ok, I did feel the pressure.
Although fund raising is oftentimes as enjoyable as a root canal, I approach it aggressively and stick to the fundamentals. Why? Because it works almost every time. Remember, if it ain’t broke …..
I want to make a difference. If someone had given me a book like this 28 years ago I could have avoided several needless mistakes and lost opportunities. You don’t need to make the same ones. I am confident that you’ll secure funding if your business concept is sound and you thoughtfully follow the five critical steps outlined in the following chapters. I would appreciate hearing about your funding experiences. Please feel free to send me an email to Jim@FundingProfessor.com.
You can do it! And, thanks for letting me help.
